I remember Hoechlin talking about the neck roll thing during the cast commentary of episode 1.10, where he mentioned that he’d actually suffered from repetitive neck spasms that caused this kind of twitch-roll movement, and that he’d used that muscle memory when he had to act out these scenes.  This is actually precisely the same motion that my roommate makes when he gets neck spasms, and I remember wondering if Hoechlin had experienced the same thing before I even watched the commentary.

The thing is, my roommate’s neck twitches are a symptom of his PTSD.  I’m sure there’s a hundred perfectly mundane reasons why someone would suffer from repetitive muscle twitches, so I’m not about to imply that there’s any connection there, but shots like these will always make me feel a little sad.  It’s funny, because Derek’s supposed to come off as brutal and frightening in this scene, but every time I see that neck roll I just think of someone trying to shake away something horrible that won’t let them go.

#oh my god yes chess metaphors aka my favourite #the king; the least powerful piece on the board- needing the strength of others to keep it standing. lose this piece and the game is over #scott looks for his friends when the darkness overtakes him. arguably the one person everyone is willing to sacrifice themselves for #the queen; the most powerful piece on the board. she will move in any way she pleases to when needing to win the game #allison goes against her fathers hunting retirement- moving in the world how she feels necessary. thrives to be strong and powerful #the rook; that who protects the king. starts off behind the other pieces yet pushes forward #one of stiles’ main priorities is scott’s safety. is heavily strategical and will move forward logically #the bishop; a piece stuck to one colour but with immense range. the bishop in medieval europe was second in line to queen and king #lydia has hidden strength that surprises everyone. self described helper to scott and allison #the knight; an irrational piece in the game. choosing a route entirely unique to themselves whilst striving to protect the king #derek’s actions can be hard to predict- being shown from day one with a morally greyness. a soldier in his own right #the pawn; the weakest piece on the board- but can suddenly become the strongest. will sacrifice themselves for the king when needed #isaac’s main goal is to help scott- gladly following him into death’s arms. started out as a victim and has risen to a survivor (☼)
